Bendigo is continuing to shine when it comes to performing arts. From grass root venues featuring unique and specialty performances, through to the historic Capital theatre and the magnificent 1,000-seat Ulumbarra Theatre, there is a diversity to both the venues and the program that covers all ages and interests.
David Lloyd, Manager of Capital Venues and Events, says although there has always been a strong performing arts culture in Bendigo, the opening of Ulumbarra in 2015 was certainly a turning point in how people experience the arts here.
“It’s really captured people’s imaginations and allowed us a greater calibre of artists,” he says. “Shows we have coming up this year, such as those from Circus Oz and Sydney Dance Company, wouldn’t have been able to perform previously because they need such a vast space. Top national acts, like the very funny Kitty Flannigan, also love Ulumbarra because they can offer twice the number of tickets.”
2017 is shaping up to be an action-packed season with an outstanding variety of performances. Coranderrk has received rave reviews and is a wonderful and unique telling of the history of Victoria; the Sydney Dance Company are returning with Frame Of Mind and Bangarra, another wonderful dance company, are coming with the incredibly dynamic Terrain…and, of course, there is so much more!
