The Bendigo Writers Festival takes place in the heart of Bendigo's View Street arts precinct.

The festival provides a forum to meet and talk about books and writing, and, mostly, to enjoy the conviviality of a festival set in View Street, Bendigo. There are interviews and debates about everything; you can be sure you’ll find something to delight, amuse, intrigue and stimulate. And we're inviting everyone to share in a warm and friendly winter weekend.

In its sixth year, Bendigo Writers Festival has dug deep to find new ways to offer audiences rich entertainment for a truly inspiring winter long weekend. New events and venues, plus brilliant international guests and a dazzling line-up of Australian writers.

Building on the success of the 2016 festival, this year the pass-program gives exclusive access to 67 sessions in five View Street venues, from 1.30pm Friday August 11 to 5pm Sunday August 13.

The Festival theme for 2017 is Where We’re At.  The topic is one sure to inspire lively conversation on the Friday Opening Night with David Astle, Maxine Beneba Clarke, Leigh Hobbs, Rebecca Huntley and David Marr.

On Saturday night, La Trobe University’s distinguished Vice Chancellor’s Fellow Tony Walker hosts a not-to-be-missed conversation on How the World Changed with London-based writer and ethicist Kenan Malik.

To close the Festival, it’s a very special conversation with comic duo Judith Lucy and Denise Scott, fresh from their triumphant London tour of their new show, Disappointments.  Kaz Cook will be interviewing Lucy and Scott to find out what happens After the Disappointments.

In between there is a plethora of guests and topics to enjoy.  Guests include international bestsellers Dava Sobel, Kenan Malik, David George Haskell and Elizabeth Kostova, courageous commentators including Susan Carland, Clementine Ford, Rebecca Huntley, David Marr, Cathy Wilcox and Louise Miligan, word wizards such as Miles Merrill, Maxine Beneba Clarke, Robert Dessaix, Bryan Dawe, Patti Miller, Marie Munkara, Michael Pryor and Brigid Delaney, as well as poets, scriptwriters, cartoonists, novelists, memoir writers, crime writers and historians.

There are also more non-pass ticketed events programmed in to Ulumbarra Theatre this year, including a performance by Spare Parts Puppet Theatre of Shaun Tan’s The Arrival for the young and young at heart,  John Safran talking about his new book, Depends What You Mean By Extremist, a fast-paced hour of spoken-word performance hosted by Slam Poet Miles Merrill, and a conversation with Dava Sobel and David George Haskell hosted by Leslie Cannold.
