Six Essential Winter Events

With winter just a few short weeks away, we’ve put together five eventful reasons to leave the comfort of your onsie, put Game of Thrones on hold and explore the Bendigo region.  Start planning your winter escape now!

8 – 10 June

Relax with a glass of red in Heathcote.  More than 30 of the region’s wineries are offering exclusive tastings, new releases, live music and gourmet food over the Queen’s Birthday long weekend.  Why we love it? Because it’s the perfect opportunity to visit cosy boutique wineries with intimate cellar doors, relax in front of an open fire and meet the winemakers - the perfect retreat on a winter’s day.

Check out the program for a full list of events, cellar doors, breweries, and accommodation and transport options.

6 – 7 July

This is your chance to huddle around a wine barrel with exclusive access to local winemakers and indulge in tasting straight from the barrel.  A selection of Bendigo wineries will be opening their barrel rooms for tours, tastings and offering an insider’s view on the mystery and romance of winemaking. Take you pick from one winery, or better still, make a day of it and visit them all!

19 – 21 July

Check out Australia’s top wool growers and prime lamb producers at the epicentre of all things sheep and wool.  Over three jam-packed days of events you can catch a cooking and carving class and sample Australia’s best produce at the Festival of Lamb. Celebrate fashion and woollen fibres with the Women of Wool luncheon, fashion parades and wearable art.  And see the best of the best of sheep breeders, shearers and wool handlers at The Sheep Show.

9 – 11 August

Local, national and international writers are in the spotlight at the eight annual event with All That Glitters.  Sit in on a reading, attend a book launch, visit the festival bookshop, be drawn into a panel discussion or take part in a workshop.

A full program is available from June 5 here.

17 August - 10 November

Because major fashion icon exhibitions are our thing! Balenciaga: shaping fashion will showcase more than 100 garments and hats crafted from the 1950s and 1960s - arguably Balenciaga's most creative period.  Expect to also see sketches, patterns, photographs, fabric samples and catwalk footage providing a unique insight into Balenciaga's salons and workrooms.
