The impact of masterworks of music upon young minds is remarkable to behold: eyes (and ears) are opened, horizons are broadened, aspirations heightened.

But equally remarkable is the effect young performers can have on masterworks. Earlier this year, the boys of the Australian Boys Choir prepared their first performance of JS Bach’s motet, Jesu, meine Freude in just under one month! Their enthusiasm and determination to get this wonderful piece right took them to new heights and stamped the live-broadcast performance with energy and excitement that thrilled their audience, both in the hall and by radio.

A similar effect has been taking place as the boys (and the men of The Vocal Consort) work on the short Mass setting written by Mozart in Salzburg in 1773. Itself a youthful work, this piece sparkles when performed by young singers.

The Vocal Consort will present Tallis’ five-part a cappella setting of the Lamentations of Jeremiah, a piece all-too-rarely heard in this country.
