Bendigo Maubisse Friendship Committee

The Bendigo Maubisse Friendship Committee (BMFC) is a delegated committee of the City of Greater Bendigo which has provided support to the community of Maubisse in Timor-Leste for the past 12 years.

Maubisse is located in the highlands 75 kilometres from Dili and the sub-district has a population of around 22,000.

Timor-Leste is one of the poorest nations in the world and therefore needs considerable support to build their capacity to improve the wellbeing of the community.

BMFC has provided much needed support in the form of education scholarships, infrastructure building and maintenance, agricultural activities, dental services , women’s health and art classes. 54 Work Teams have visited Maubisse over the years and all of the teams are made up of volunteers. In addition, 45 shipping containers of goods in the form of school furniture, building materials, health products ,clothing ,sewing machines, agricultural implements and numerous other materials have been sent to Maubisse.

The BMFC undertakes a consultation process every 2 years with the Maubisse community who develop a list of their requests and then BMFC advises which of those priorities it is able to support. The community then approves of these initiatives . There is now a very strong emphasis on building the capacity of the Timorese people and wherever possible local staff and materials are used in providing services.
