When asked about the choice of the title Perspective for the exhibition artist, Susan McMinn said, “A variety of perspectives have been formulated from not only my personal view of selected items found in the Bendigo Soldiers Memorial Museum archival collection, but also within the construct of the composition using such items to create narrative in still life paintings.

“These works intend to demonstrate multiple views of war reflected in the items characteristics. Selected items were grouped together to design a juxtaposition of the lurid narrative surrounding the soldier with the allure of home.

“A map, ration kit and hand grenade demonstrate the stark reality of war highlighted by the contrasting beauty found in the flowers, doyleys, embroidered fabric and soft home decor. On the other hand there is the game of Two Up possibly suggesting the Aussie larrikin characteristics, and the renewed aesthetic of the somewhat macabre ammunition reflected in the trench art.

The Soldiers Memorial Institute Military Museum curator, Ms Kirsten McKay, is looking forward to seeing the watercolours alongside installations of the museum’s collection.

She said of the artworks she has seen so far, “The use of watercolour and the subdued vintage tone add to the narrative, the warmth and calling of home and of a time past.”

Kirsten sees this exhibition of an opportunity to bring a whole new audience into the military museum and showcase the permanent collection to enable a new platform for contemplation of memory and memorials.
